Burgundy and Bordeaux Wine Glasses

Examples with Burgundy and Bordeaux...

Now that we have some simple stemware science under our belts, it will help us to understand the actual wines we are drinking so as to direct the wine to zones of the tongue that will assist us in getting the most pleasure out of our wines and any our crystal white or red wine glasses.

For instance, if you take our 27 ounce "Classic" Burgundy glass with its 4¼ inch diameter rim, which directs the flow of the Burgundian red to the front and center of the tongue so that it avoids contact with the side zones of the tongue, we are playing down the acidity of the Burgundy and thereby accentuating the rounder more mellow qualities of the wine.

Our 22½ ounce "Classic" Bordeaux glass with its 3¾ inch diameter rim is more conical and will direct the wine toward the front of the tongue where the sweetness is more profound. This plays up the rich fruits of a Cabernet/Merlot style red wine before it ultimately reaches the back portion of the tongue, where the tannins and acids are more discernable. Now this is what we call controlling our wine experience!
